Huitt-Zollars developed a Master Plan, prepared Construction Documents, and coordinated with a variety of state and federal agencies, for a new 500-acre national cemetery. Located southeast of Bakersfield, interments include veterans from World War II through the War on Global Terrorism. The cantilevered Committal Service Shelter is architecturally elegant and a unique structural challenge due to its thin profile, long span and the wind & seismic loading. The cemetery design reflects environmental sensitivity to the region’s natural resources, topography, geology and vegetation. Landscape and irrigation designs incorporate minimal water usage; plants and crushed rock ground covers intentionally blend into the existing vegetation. The cemetery layout corresponds to the site's terrain and takes advantage of vista opportunities.
